Reclaiming Health: Ditching Ultra-Processed Foods for a Thriving Gut and Well-Being

The word is out: Ultra-processed foods are leading to declining life expectancies in the U.S., poor gut health, more dementia, rising rates of diabetes, and many other health issues. We don’t have to take this lying down. Let’s start to get these foods out of our diets. Here’s how to do it.

What is Processed Food?

First, let’s talk about what an ultra-processed food is and isn’t. It isn’t simply a “processed food” although a lot of times we see these terms used interchangeably. People have been processing food for thousands of years. Dried, canned, milled, or fermented foods are all examples of processed food, and that’s not necessarily not a bad thing. Processing food has helped humans survive and thrive by making it last a bit longer and stabilizing our food supply.

On the other hand, ultra-processed food is a modern creation. And until very recently, we didn’t realize was doing as much harm as it is. Ultra-processing food started to really take off in the mid-1900s with the addition of all kinds of substances to traditionally processed foods to make them last longer—perhaps years longer. As more thickeners, stabilizers, and emulsifiers were discovered, they were added to a myriad of foods. Today, ultra-processed foods make up nearly 60% of the standard American diet for adults and as much as 70% of our kids’ diets.

The problem is that these ultra-processed foods underwent very little testing since our bodies cannot even digest most of them. It was long thought that the additives were something our bodies couldn’t use and they would just pass right through us, like the random facts we’d cram right before an exam, gone the next day. Only, it turns out that our guts aren’t empty tubes, they are lush gardens, and the substances that we don’t digest—fake sugars, emulsifying agents, and thickeners—the bacteria that make up our microbiome do digest. And what we feed our microbiome matters a lot. Our ultra-processed diets have been fertilizing the microbial weeds instead of the flowers. This leads to increased rates of obesity, diabetes, and maybe even some cancers.

Reversing the Damage from Ultra-Processed Foods

So, what’s a good gut gardener to do? Most importantly, don’t panic. Nothing has been done that can’t be undone. You can make choices today that can radically benefit your health. Cut out the ultra-processed stuff and replace it with whole foods that you enjoy. Within a day or two, you’ll start to see big changes happening in your bowels, your blood sugar, and quite possibly your mood. So, here’s how you do that.

In my book, Eat Everything, I list 25 additives to avoid. For the sake of simplicity, a good rule of thumb is to look at the ingrediens in the foods you buy. If an ingredient is listed that you can’t picture in nature, put the package back on the shelf. It’s important to recognize that ultra-processed foods aren’t just the chips and candy bars that we might be avoiding when trying to eat healthy. We get tripped up because many of the so-called healthy foods promoted as good for us are really just as bad as the chips, maybe even more so.

Become a Label Reader

When you go shopping, ignore the front of packages with words like “natural” or “organic” or even “handmade.” Instead, start becoming an ingredient list reader. Instead of ultra-processed, too sweet yogurt with 10 ingredients, opt for yogurt made with just milk and bacterial cultures. Top it with some fresh fruit. Instead of a shelf-stable salad dressing made to last for years with all manner of gums and additives, mix up some oil and vinegar or lemon juice and dress your salad with that.

This week, skip the supermarket bread that says “whole grain” or “whole wheat” on the front of the package, but the back of the package reveals a whole bunch of ingredients that you can’t picture in your mind’s eye as growing anywhere but on a laboratory bench. Instead, look in the freezer section for bread with minimal ingredients, preserved by freezing, not additives. By making a change or two every time you go to the grocery store, within a few weeks, you will start to walk back the ultra-processed takeover of your kitchen.

It Starts with One Bite

Lastly, ignore the voices that tell you that you can’t do this. We don’t have to accept that our food supply is a mess and we have to struggle with diet-related diseases as a consequence. When we first can recognize an ultra-processed food (read those labels!) and then instead choose a whole food or less processed alternative, we are taking back control over our bodies. Food should be a source of joy and health, not discomfort. Replace those ultra-processed products with things that you enjoy just as much or even more. You absolutely can make positive changes to get this stuff out of your diet. It starts with just one bite.

MentaHeart

MentaHeart contains a range of nutrients to not just improve heart efficiency, but overall heart health as well. And improving heart health also improves mental wellness significantly.

Studies have now shown that the heart is the body’s third brain, containing approximately 40,000 neurons that can sense, feel, learn, and remember. Similar to the gut-brain axis, the heart and brain are also closely connected via the heart-brain axis. The heart sends messages to the brain about what it needs, how the body feels, and more. When the heart is not in optimal condition, mental wellness problems may manifest. Many people misunderstand these as issues with the brain, when they actually originate from the heart.

As the first product of its kind to support mental wellness through the heart-brain axis, MentaHeart helps connect what we feel (heart/emotions) to what we know (brain/intelligence).

Natural Parasite Cleanse

One of the most common questions I answer (almost daily) is about finding the best natural parasite cleanse. The truth is, I am actually glad people are asking this question because I think many people don’t realize how common intestinal parasites are. This post will go through my favorite natural supplements to safely rid the body of parasites. To learn the signs and symptoms you may need a parasite cleanse, check out this post.

What are Parasites in Humans?

Parasites are organisms that inhabit the human intestinal environment and cause damage. The most common types of parasites in humans include protozoa and helminths (worms). Nematodes (roundworms), cestodes (tapeworms), and trematodes (flatworms and schistosomes) are among the most common helminths that inhabit the human gut. Their waste products cause inflammation, irritation, and can even affect the nervous system. Parasites also consume important nutrients from the body, often leading to malnourishment and anemia.

Symptoms of Parasitic Infection

When parasites invade and reproduce in the body, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Digestive issues, such as bloating, cramping, diarrhea, constipation, or nausea
  • Low iron or anemia
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Muscle or joint pain or aches
  • Teeth grinding
  • Increase or decrease in appetite
  • Insomnia or restlessness
  • Skin irritations
  • Sugar cravings
  • Brain fog
  • Dehydration
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Allergies
  • Itchiness, especially around the ears, nose, or anus

Before You Begin a Parasite Cleanse

Some people should use caution and consult a physician before beginning a parasite cleanse.

  • Anyone suffering from a serious health condition
  • Young children
  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Elderly people or those with a weekend immune system
  • People with a weak digestive system
  • Anyone with chronic constipation (if you can’t poop out dead parasites, they become toxic waste in your body!)

Herbs for a Parasite Cleanse

The following herbs can effectively rid the body of parasites.

Mimosa pudica

Mimosa pudica is an Ayurvedic herb commonly known as the “touch-me-not” plant. It is an effective anti-parasitic that has a paralyzing-effect on pathogens. This herb is especially effective on liver flukes, worms, and intestinal nematodes. Additionally, Mimosa pudica seed powder works as an intestinal scrubber and removes eggs and toxic debris parasites leave behind in the intestinal lining.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Because of its proven anti-fertility properties, women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant should never consume Mimosa pudica.

Black Walnut Hull

Black walnut hull contains high concentrations of astringent tannins and a compound called juglone that is lethal to parasites. The young green hulls have the highest concentration of juglone. Black walnut also acts as a mild laxative, which can help facilitate elimination of parasite waste products from the digestive tract. You can find black walnut hull in the form of a liquid tincture.

Clove bud

Clove contains eugenol, which is a powerful antimicrobial agent. Eugenol is very effective for killing microscopic parasites and their larvae and eggs. Clove is also a powerful antioxidant, which relieves inflammation and rids the body of free radicals. Additionally, cloves may provide some relief from nausea, vomiting, gas, diarrhea, dizziness, and low blood pressure. These properties make clove an valuable ingredient in a parasite cleanse.

Neem

Neem is another Ayurvedic remedy with many uses. In agriculture, neem is often used as a natural pesticide, and it also kills harmful bacteria and fungi. For centuries, healers have used neem to effectively treat malaria. Compounds in neem inhibit the parasites’ ability to feed. This interrupts their life cycle and prevents eggs from hatching and larvae from growing. Neem also has properties that help rid the body of toxins released by parasites.

Foods to Avoid

If you want to embark on a parasite cleanse, there are a few foods to avoid.

Sugar – Parasites need a steady supply of sugar to survive. In fact, sugar cravings are a common symptom of a parasitic infection. Try to limit or eliminate all sugar from your diet during a parasite cleanse.

Processed foods – Most of these contain a lot of sugar and other ingredients that are not good for your digestive system.

Pork – Pork is a major source of parasites, and most forms contain a lot of preservatives and other junk that will not benefit a parasite cleanse.

Gluten, dairy, alcohol, and other inflammatory foods – Reducing as much inflammation as possible will improve the results of any cleanse.

Predatory fish – Predatory fish and many kinds of sushi frequently contain pathogenic parasites.

Foods to Consume

Some foods will support your body during a parasite cleanse, either by enhancing the anti-parasitic effects or reducing inflammation and promoting effective digestion.

  • Pumpkin seeds – anti-parasitic properties
  • Enzymatic fruits: papaya and pineapple
  • Apple cider vinegar – pH balance and digestive support
  • Garlic and green onions – anti-parasitic and anti-inflammatory
  • Green vegetables – anti-inflammatory and promote healthy digestion
  • Extra virgin coconut oil – healthy fats and anti-parasitic properties
  • Fennel tea – mildly laxative and anti-parasitic
  • Probiotic foods (kombucha, fermented foods, plant-based yogurt) – replenishing the microbiome

Speaking of Probiotics. . .

Since parasites disrupt the gut environment, it’s no wonder they cause dysbiosis. That’s why it’s vital that you support your gut during a cleanse and replenish and restore the microbiota after a parasite cleanse. Click here for my favorite bundle of microbiome-supporting products. These products will help reduce sugar cravings, cleanse the intestinal lining, and help repopulate your microbiome.

My Favorite Parasite Cleanse

Listen, there are hundreds of parasite cleanse products out there. I prefer the CellCore line of products because they are effective, but not overly aggressive (i.e. they won’t keep you trapped in your bathroom for days). This kit includes all you need with instructions and guidance for a complete parasite cleanse. You’ll need a referral code to order from CellCore; use the practitioner code cVhN1IgM. Happy cleansing!

10 Signs You Need a Parasite Cleanse

Many people don’t realize how prevalent parasites really are. The truth is, if you breathe air, you could have a parasite. You can also get parasites from insect bites, swimming in natural water sources, eating unwashed produce, consuming undercooked meats, or even from public restrooms. If you travel frequently (especially internationally), eat sushi, or if you have pets, the chances you have a parasite are even greater. Read on to learn some of the signs you may need a parasite cleanse.

What are common parasites in humans?

Intestinal parasites are organisms that live in the human digestive tract and cause damage to their host. They not only consume nutrients from the foods you eat, but they can also cause physical damage to the lining of the intestines. There are literally hundreds of types of parasites common to humans. Some are microscopic, while others can be large enough to be seen with the naked eye.

The most common parasites are either microscopic protozoa or worms, like tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms, and flatworms. Symptoms of parasitic infections vary depending on the type of parasite you have. Below are some common symptoms of parasites that may help you discover the culprit.

10 Signs You Need a Parasite Cleanse

1. Unexplained Digestive issues

Many parasites, especially worms, can cause abdominal cramping, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, and bloating. Left untreated, a parasitic infection can even lead to leaky gut, bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), and dysbiosis.

2. Low Iron / Anemia

Tiny parasitic bloodsuckers may bite into the lining of your gut and even attach themselves. Over time, they can deplete red blood cells, leading to anemia.

3. Fatigue

As parasites deplete nutrients before they can be absorbed, you will experience unusual exhaustion. It is not uncommon for a person with a parasitic infection to become malnourished from this lack of nutrients.

4. Muscle and Joint Pain or Body Aches

Painful or aching muscles or joints can be symptoms of an intestinal parasite. That’s because intestinal parasites migrate to the joints via the bloodstream. Once there, they excrete toxins that cause inflammation that may resemble flu-like aches and pains.

5. Bruxism (Teeth Grinding)

Just as parasites can affect the joints, they can cause grinding, gnashing, or clenching the teeth, especially at night. This results from parasitic waste toxins that can bring on anxiety and restlessness.

6. Changes in Appetite

You’ve heard about a pregnant mother eating for two. But have you ever thought about eating for thousands? As intestinal parasites rob your body of nutrients, you may not feel full after a meal or experience unusual hunger. On the other hand, some types of parasites cause bloating and a sensation of fullness, diminishing your appetite.

7. Insomnia or Restless Sleep

Parasites and their toxins can invade the central nervous system. There, they disrupt normal production and function of important neurotransmitters. This can disrupt your circadian rhythm and cause sleep disturbances.

8. Skin Irritations

The waste produced by parasites can lead to rashes, hives, eczema, itching, and even acne. Many parasites reside on the surface of the skin. Others secrete toxins that can trigger immune reactions and inflammation on the skin.

9. Sugar Cravings

Parasites need a steady supply of sugar to survive. In order to get the sugar they crave, they interfere with our neurotransmitters and hijack our serotonin, which controls cravings and appetite. This triggers cravings for sugar and carbs in the host.

10. Brain Fog or Poor Memory

Parasites release toxins through their waste and when they die off. These toxins can affect the brain and cause memory loss and forgetfulness, brain fog, decreased focus, headaches, depression, and anxiety.

So you think you have a parasite. . .

If you think you may need a parasite cleanse, I’ve got you. Come check out this post to learn about my favorite natural parasite cleanse to rid your body of unwanted freeloaders.
