10 Ways to Use Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon Essential Oil is Versatile

And everyone thinks about it as a great single essential oil for diffusing and refreshing environments. But I wanted to think outside the box. What are some uses for lemon essential oil that are more unique?   Here are ten uses for lemon essential oil in my home.

Let’s Talk about Ten Uses for Lemon Essential Oil

1. Remove Sticky Messes

Confession. I actually don’t use that much lemon essential oil, especially in comparison to how much some people use lemon essential oil. But this. This. Removing sticky messes from surfaces. This is my number one use of lemon essential oil. Whether it is left on tape residue on my skin, or a couch, or a wall, lemon essential oil will remove the stick mess that is taunting you.

When I was living in London, the new European office was being built. The walls are all glass, and, for safety reasons, this required that duct tape be added to the walls until the decals were applied. The cleaner complained to me one evening that she was so frustrated because she couldn’t get the tape residue off of the wall after the decals were applied. Lemon essential oil to the rescue. All of the residue was gone from every single wall in the office the next day.

2. Condition Cutting Board

I love combining lemon essential oil for with all things kitchen. My cutting board gets a nice rub down with lemon essential oil and coconut oil anytime it looks dull or overly cut. Just mix a couple of drops in with a half teaspoon of coconut oil and wipe the board with a clean rag.

3. Soften Cuticles

While getting manicures in New York, I noticed that so many salons offer lemon manicures. Lemon essential oil can not only soften cuticles, but it can also promote nail growth by fighting fungus known to slow down nail growth.

4. Daily Shower Spray

You can easily refresh your shower after each shower with a daily shower spray. To make your shower spray combine 2 cups distilled water, 2 T Castile soap, 10 drops lemon oil, and 15 drops tea tree essential oil in a spray bottle. Honestly, I would steer toward a non-BPA hard plastic bottle, especially with children in the household. Glass in the shower is a potentially risky situation, and plastic may be a better option.

5. Open the Solar Plexus Chakra

Lemon energy is similar to the fire energy of the solar plexus. The solar plexus color is yellow, so the color of lemon is a good match. The solar plexus is where we house our determination, our sense of self, and our internal power. Apply a couple of drops of lemon essential oil around and just above the navel if you have to go into a challenging discussion or a situation that makes you nervous.

6. Pre-Workout Water Bottle Add In

I love to put a drop or two of lemon essential oil in my favorite water bottle before heading to the yoga studio. Lemon essential oil has been shown to increase fat breakdown in experimental models. The flavor of the essential oil isn’t my very favorite (and a lot of people disagree with me on that point), so I only add in a drop of lemon essential oil. I then add in 2-3 drops of peppermint essential oil, because I love the flavor and the cooling effect of the menthol.

7. Protect the Skin

Isolated extracts from lemon essential oil have been shown to protect the skin from lipid peroxidation and free radicals. And both of these have been shown to accelerate tissue damage. It is hypothesized that lemon essential oil has strong antioxidant properties that protect the skin from free radical damage. Combine a drop of lemon essential oil with Vitamin E liquid for a moisturizing and nourishing addition to your skin care routine. Vitamin E also works to fight lipid peroxidation and free radicals, so win-win.

8. Condition Leathers

Combine 1/4 cup fractionated coconut oil, 1/4 cup white vinegar, and 10 drops lemon essential oil to create your own leather conditioner. Polish shoes, jackets, and sofas to keep them soft and supple.

9. Naturally Highlight Hair

You can lighten hair of any shade using lemon essential oil. Combine 15 drops of lemon essential oil, with 5 drops each frankincense and sandalwood in one cup of water. Spray on wet hair before going out in the sun. Shake well before each use. Go easy if you have dark hair as no one wants that orange look for the hair.

10. Remove Stains before Starting the Laundry

Simply rubbing a few drops of lemon essential oil on clothing can help to remove stains before you put them in the laundry. It is especially effective on grease stains. Use caution with dark clothing as lemon essential oil has a natural lightening effect.

Kunzea Essential Oil

Is there anything better than a new essential oil?

Kunzea essential oil comes from a native shrub that grows wild along the southern coast of Australia and Tasmania, some of the most undisturbed areas in the world. The plant has pink and white flowers. Flowers that are pink are thought to help open and expand the heart chakra.

Some people maintain that Kunzea has a spicy and woodsy aroma, but I think it is more subtle than that. It smells a bit like tea tree essential oil, but more delicate and floral. When applied to the skin, it is also a bit gentler and milder than tea tree.

What Chemical Constituents Make Kunzea Special?

Kunzea contains high levels of alpha-pinene and eucalyptol that help to soothe muscles and reduce the appearance of blemishes. It also has overlapping chemical constituents with oregano, tea tree, frankincense, hyssop, and lilac.

How to Use Kunzea

Kunzea is labeled for topical and aromatic use and can be applied neat or diluted to the skin. There are no photosensitizing ingredients in Kunzea, so it is perfect to use all summer long even when you’re out in the sun.

Skincare

Because it can reduce the appearance of blemishes, it is perfect to add into your daily skin care routine. Use only on a spot or add a drop to moisturizer and apply to the entire face.

Workout Routine

Kunzea is also perfect for a workout routine as it soothes fatigued muscles. Add a few drops to melted coconut oil and allow to harden in the refrigerator to create an easy muscle rub. Or even apply directly to the chest before working out.

Make a Friendship Roller Ball

This is one of my favorite roller blends, and it makes a great gift for all of your besties. (Pssst. . .be sure to make one up for yourself too!) Get the recipe here.

Why I’ll Never Be an Aromatherapist

No Disrespect to Any Aromatherapist

It just isn’t the path that I will ever pursue. Last week a super fan tagged me in a post on Facebook where an essential oil company stated that I was not a doctor nor was I trained in aromatherapy. They suggested that this made me unqualified to suggest that essential oils are ingestible. They suggested that every person consult with a doctor or aromatherapist to determine individual needs before ingesting.

This Represents Exactly Why I Will Never Pursue a Certificate in Aromatherapy

My Why is to teach people that the answers to optimal health are already inside of them. That wellness is within them just waiting to be awakened. The aromatherapy dogma of “You must talk to me before knowing how to manage your health” is completely against My Why. I will not choose to believe that the vast majority of people are careless with essential oils, and additionally that it requires medical training to use them appropriately.

Of Course, You Must Use Care with Essential Oils

Can essential oils be dangerous when misused? Of course they can. This is why I have advocated for years for ingestion of very small amounts of essential oils. My best research indicates that essential oils are potentially harmful, even deadly, only when consumed in excess. Friends don’t let friends ingested multiple milliliters of essential oil. It’s not a thing. It’s bad news bears. Don’t do it.

Consume drops. 1-2 is sufficient for anyone at one time. When you consume essential oils, that are labeled for consumption, in small amounts, I conclude that there is no evidence that they cause harm.

Furthermore, the FDA Agrees with Me

According to the Code of Federal Regulations Title 21, Volume 3, the Food and Drug Administration recognizes dozens of essential oils, solvent free oleoresins, and natural extracts as Generally Safe for Human Consumption. This allows them to be added into foods and beverages and for essential oils to be labeled as dietary supplements. All without the consultation of an aromatherapist.

Bottom Line

Every single one of us is able to make our best decisions about essential oil usage. We do not need the dogmatic approach that unlocking the power of essential oils is only in the hands of a few people. This approach completely negates the fact that humans have been safely using essential oils for thousands of years. The systematized approach to aromatherapy is only a few hundred years old. Just as some religions tried to keep the Bible out of commoners hands for years, so too are *SOME* aromatherapists trying to control essential oils. (If you are an aromatherapist who doesn’t do this, props to you. Love you, mean it. Completely ignore this article.)

Travel Roll On Recipes

Traveling with Essential Oils Can be Tough.

It can be scary to think about airport security confiscating them, they get way to hot in the car, and you never seem to have the right oil at the right time.  When on the roads, a good travel roll on can make life so much easier.

I recently took a trip to Salt Lake City convention, and I knew I was facing a lot of work in a very short period of time.  From early mornings to late nights, from video shoots to Club dinners, the whole week was packed with activity, Thankfully, I had planned for all the days and had plenty of essential oil travel roll ons.

Combining Essential Oils and Crystals

Each of these blends and simple and easy to make, and every one is diluted in fractionated coconut oil. To intensitfy the experience of the essential oils, I added stones to each of these. The combination of essential oils and crystals is hard to describe, but there is something special about the energy of both, especially in combination.

Travel Roll On Recipes

Each of these travel roll on recipes is designed to be a 5 mL container. I used fractionated coconut oil,  but you can easily use any carrier oil that you choose. To make them, simply add your stones to an empty roll on container. Then add your essential oils. Finally add as much carrier oil as it takes to fill the 5 mL container.
